Outdoor garden concept for the elderly in LA Chinatown
2024
Pen and marker on paper
9 x 12"

My 20 initial sketches consisted of a mix of spatial and product concepts. I tried to combine common recreational activities with the aesthetics of LA Chinatown, inspired by a lot of the air vents and awnings, incorporating other aspects of Chinese culture as well.

This project surrounded the theme “Displacement in LA” and I chose to specifically focus on the issue of the lack of elderly spaces in LA Chinatown.
My research was divided into two parts: the lives of Chinese elderly abroad, and designing for the elderly. I learned about the daily habits and lives of Chinese elderly to understand their needs, and learned about features that make spaces beneficial for them.
